Scan Sneaker Boxes with Camera Search - Deal Reaper sneaker reselling blog

If you have ever stared at a long sneaker SKU and thought, "There has to be a faster way," this update is for you.

Deal Reaper now includes a camera icon in search so you can scan a sneaker box barcode instead of typing the SKU or product name manually. The feature is now live and available in the app.

What Is Camera Search in Deal Reaper?

Camera Search lets you tap a camera icon directly from search and scan a barcode on a sneaker box. Deal Reaper then resolves that code into the best search query and runs it through the same search flow used for typed input.

That means you can:

  • Identify pairs faster when SKUs are long
  • Search unfamiliar inventory without guessing names
  • Reduce manual typing during high-volume listing sessions

For many resellers, this is the fastest way to move from "box in hand" to "item identified."

Why We Built It

Resellers asked for a StockX-like scan experience that works inside real workflows, not just as a one-off camera tool.

The goal was simple: improve speed-to-list and inventory lookup while keeping search behavior consistent with the rest of the app.

This shipped from direct community feedback in our Featurebase request: Add Camera Icon to Search Bar for Box Scanning.

Built for Real Reseller Workflows

This barcode scanner was integrated through a shared search entrypoint so it works across both major search surfaces:

  • Main Search tab
  • Add-to-Portfolio search flow

Using one reusable implementation keeps behavior consistent, avoids duplicate logic, and makes future updates easier to maintain.

Faster Matching with UPC to SKU Resolution

Sneaker boxes often use UPC or EAN barcodes, but resale search commonly matches best on SKU or product name. To bridge that gap, Deal Reaper now resolves scan results before searching.

The resolution pipeline can:

  1. Keep codes that already look like a SKU
  2. Resolve numeric UPC/EAN values via lookup
  3. Extract embedded Nike/Jordan-style SKU patterns from lookup titles
  4. Fall back to the best available query when needed

This significantly improves hit rate compared to searching raw numeric barcodes alone.

StockX-Style Scanner Experience, Refined

To improve first-try scan success, the camera interface includes clear visual guidance:

  • Dimmed overlay with centered scan cutout
  • Orange corner brackets for targeting
  • Helper text: "Point at the barcode on your shoe box"
  • Animated scan line

The scanner also uses controlled single-scan behavior so results are processed one at a time, helping avoid duplicate detections and repeated searches.

Better Fallbacks When a Match Is Not Found

Not every barcode will map cleanly every time. Instead of dead-ending, Deal Reaper now shows an Item Not Found bottom sheet with immediate next steps:

  • Dismiss and continue scanning
  • Tap Type to Search and continue manually

This keeps momentum during sourcing, listing, and inventory checks.

Reliability and Platform Details

The scanner is built with Apple VisionKit (DataScannerViewController) and supports barcode symbologies commonly found on sneaker packaging, including EAN, UPC, Code 128, Code 39, and QR.

Camera permission and availability states are handled gracefully, including guidance to app settings when access is restricted.

On the reliability side, search-related server error paths now include analytics context to improve diagnostics around retries and stability.

What This Means for Sellers

Camera Search helps you spend less time typing and more time moving inventory.

If you run high-volume operations, list unfamiliar pairs, or simply want quicker product identification, this feature can meaningfully reduce friction in day-to-day workflows.
